Where Not to Ride
Ok, this might sound weird, but there are places you should definitely avoid. I’ve made a list of specific and not so specific places below. The reasons are largely to do with safety, but also sometimes because you’ll slow traffic down, annoy motorists, which almost always ends up with motorists painting all cyclists with the same brush.
Unless it’s early morning or you’re riding with others (safety in numbers), avoid like the plague:
- Warrigal Rd
- Chapel St – car doors and jaywalkers make this a sketchy bike thoroughfare
- Any major arterial like North/Wellington Rd, where there is no bike path or lane
- The Nepean Highway north of Mordialloc
- Hoddle St (I know people who swear it’s ok, but seriously, it’s not – especially between Victoria Parade and Toorak Rd)
