Where to Ride

Where to Ride
We are fortunate in Melbourne to have loads and loads of great cycling paths, as well as bike friendly roads (think Beach Rd).

The best advice I can give for the beginner is to stick to bike paths initially. There are loads around like the Merri Creek bike trail, Yarra River, or Beach Rd.

You can also plan your own ride with the Cycling Melbourne Ride Planner, which will allow you to plan and save your ride and calculate your calories. It’s a great little tool, so check it out here here. As at December 2009, the calorie widget is still in development, but keep your eyes out as it’s going to be awesome.

You can also check out the list of other people’s publicly listed rides, or plan your own here. Bikely and Map My Ride also have good ride lists.

If you live anywhere near Bayside Melbourne I recommend you just jump on the Beach Rd bike path and ride, ride, ride!

As you progress you can ride some roads will gives you greater flexibility.

For the more adventurous person, you can start riding the roads right away. The more riding you can do at an efficient level, the more calories you will burn at the same time as building a good fitness base.
